ALAN WAKE 2 Inspired Level Blockout

Personal Project

Duration: 4 Weeks Half-Time Whiteboxing + 1 Week Set Dressing
 
Description: This portfolio piece showcases a survival horror level for a third-person shooter game, drawing its primary inspiration from Alan Wake 2 and games within the Resident Evil franchise. The design of this level is centered around: 

  • Creating an atmosphere of terror and suspense, through the use of lighting

  • Telling an understandable story through environmental storytelling, and documents

  • Helping the player construct a cognitive mapping, a mental map, through

    • constructing distinctive POIs

    • player guidance techniques

Engine & Tools Used: 

  • Unreal 5

  • Blueprints

  • Landscape Tool

  • Foilage Tool

 

Design Principals:

  • Make players feel guided by using lighting, landmarks, and memorable space

  • The next destination should always/almost be visible to the player, but the path to it might be hidden

  • Incorporate multiple types of space

My Work: I was responsible for conceptualization, whiteboxing, blueprinting, playtesting, set dressing, and lighting of the level. I modded the asset pack to better suit my need for player movement and camera settings. I also successfully implemented the following gameplay mechanics.

  • AI Functionalities

  • Switch Reality Mechanic

  • High Beam Flashlight that weakens enemies

  • Cinematic Trigger Events

  • Document Collecting Mechanic
